Emergency medical alert

by Joe Carroccio

This is an emergency medical alert that we hope will be taken seriously. It is deadly serious. Drug resistant tuberculosis.

As of September 15, there are now 20 cases of drug resistant tuberculosis in Cleveland area hospital isolation wards. It can be safely assumed that if there are 20 cases in isolation with manifestations of the full blown

disease, there are hundreds of people walking around with the microbe without being aware of it. You do not have to be HIV positive to contract drug resistant TB. While people with weakened immune systems are most at risk, anybody can contract TB and remain healthy until your immune system is taxed. Staying out all night, drugs, poppers, alcohol, all these things tax the immune system.

How could this happen? It happened because the AIDS crisis was minimalized or ignored completely by public denial, people

in our community included. (For those of you who came to our booth at the NOCI Picnic and asked the question "Why should I care about AIDS, I don't have it," here's a nasty incurable disease that can kill you too.) It is foolhardy to think that another deadly microbe isn't waiting around some corner to take advantage of this host called humans.

Aside from drug resistant TB and AIDS there is one more thing we need to be aware of starting right now: influenza, type A Beijing. This is the single most deadly flu virus that can present itself at the beginning of the flu season, which started early this year. There are already many reported cases.

This is not meant to frighten you. It's meant to educate. If you have AIDS or are HIV positive, be very careful about being in close quarters with sneezing, coughing people. Get a flu shot if your doctor recommends it, and get pneumovaxed. It is a vaccine for bacterial pneumonia. We want you to be here for the cure.

Remember, something that may be just an inconvenience to you may cause the death of someone with AIDS. Be considerate; if you're sick, stay home. In summary, batten down the hatches, it's going to be a rough winter. A public service announcement from ACT ✓
